Guitar Hero 5
In the past Activision was a name that I automatically assumed gave a quality gaming experience. There were times when I was disappointed in a particular effort or project they had put forth, but not this time.
Guitar Hero 5 is one of the latest Video Game titles in the Guitar Hero Franchise, but not by any stretch of the imagination "the least". One would think that a lot of the best Guitar Hero songs had been used in earlier titles. It is true there are indeed an entire list of kick ass tunes for you to jam to on the earlier GH games, and considering this is GH5 ..that's a long list. Do not fear however, there are priceless gems on this game for you to enjoy no matter your music genre preference. In fact there are 85 songs by 83 Artists on the Game Disc. I think it's important to remember I'm not even counting DLC* yet.*DlC-(Downloadable Content) can be free or purchaseable, this usually would be extra songs.
As we all probably know, Guitar Hero songs are performed by pressing the appropriately color coded keys and moving the strum bar on your guitar controller. If pressed and 'strummed in time to the moving notes on your television screen... you advance your score and move forward in the game. Press the notekeys and strum out of time, and the crowd Boo's you off stage to try again in another venue. The graphics are sufficient for most as they are actually quite good for this type of game, and although important are not as integral to a game of this type as they would be to an action/fps style game. As well it is important to note that as usual, this game is playable with ALL guitar hero controllers, microphones, guitars, and drums. Yes ,that is correct! Guitar Hero 5 is not just another guitar game. You can indeed use peripherals from other activision titles to play "Band" oriented gigs. Now that is a great time for all, and a lot of quality 'Family fun' .You may 'jump in' and out of Songs at any time,in an all new mode available for GH5. It's called Party Mode, you'll want to keep that in mind.Another interesting side note is the ability to rock out on stage as your Xbox Avatar.Playeable online and off,Solo or Group, with a complete mixture of music styles and Genres, this game is actually pretty great!
Bad points? Well yeah Guitar Hero Songs are like "Reality Shows".There is a new one popping up every twenty minutes and it is very hard to differentiate between quality and garbage without putting out some dollars. Basically it's a great addition to a game market that is already flooded with games of this type, that seems counterproductive and more like a money grab than anything for fans and consumers. My other bad point, although the following may be fine with some, it's a 'deal breaker' for other hardcore GH fans. That bad point is the music selection is multi style and genre. I had earlier listed that as a positive, but I ALSO must list it as a negative . There are a lot of gamers out there who just WILL NOT buy and play a style of music they do not like. So in the end a lot of these gamers buy the game for a small portion of the songs only. Worse even, there will be others that are so put off by this, they will NOT buy the game period.
All in all they wouldn't have made a Guitar Hero 5 unless they believed people would find it worthwhile and fun.In this they succeeded. And although I believe it to be one more occasion of trying to capitalize on the GH style music game, I also must say we wouldn't buy it if we didn't want it, and apparently we as gamers, want it.
