Top 10 Items of The Legend of Zelda - Play Nintendo

With excitement regarding Skyward Sword's item upgrade system at an all time high, what better time to sit down and have a look at the best items in the Zelda series? I previously looked at the Top 10 Enemies in OOT, so any chance I get to write about Zelda, I'm gonna take it. I am only listing items that can be assigned to an input, so swords, shields, tunics etc. won't make the cut. Yeah, I know that swords and shields can be equipped in the handheld games, but I'd rather look at some of the other items instead. OK let's get on to number 10.

10) Skull Hammer – Wind Waker

Hammers have showed up in multiple Zelda games, but I think the Skull Hammer is the best of the bunch. It is an extremely powerful hammer sporting a nifty double use. Much like other hammers it can be used to fight enemies and take some of them down with one swing. However, Link wields so much power with the Skull Hammer that he can be rendered motionless for a moment. It can also be used to drive pegs into the ground opening up previously unreachable paths.

9) Fire Rod – A Link to the Past

One of the most useful items in A Link to the Past has to be the Fire Rod. I know it appears in other games, but I feel it is best utilized in the SNES classic. It throws fireballs across the screen, but will use up a little bit of magic power. It lights torches on contact and is essential for solving a number of puzzles in the game; even making some puzzles easier due to its long range. Adding to its useful puzzle solving trait is its ability to be wielded as a weapon. It will instantly burn some enemies alive and must even be used to take down multiple bosses in the game.

8) Bombs – Multiple Zelda Games

Bombs are a long time staple for the Zelda series. Like a lot of items on this list (you will notice a trend) it can be a very versatile item and prove worthy in a number of situations. It is a deadly weapon that can destroy a number of bosses from the franchise, but its main use would have to be its ability to blow up shit. Walls, floors, boxes, and even rocks can be completely obliterated; the bomb takes no prisoner. They have even shown a little innovation over the series in the form of Bombchus and Water Bombs. However, when you think you've seen everything they can do, Skyward Sword has you rolling bombs along the ground.

7) Bottle – Multiple Zelda Games

Just about anything can be held inside these magical bottles making bottles a great item to seek. Some uses included catching faeries that will revive a fallen Link, storing potions to replenish your hearts, and even killer bees that will attack enemies on your behalf.  Bottles can also store a variety of other things including a magical blue fire that melts red ice in Ocarina of Time and Gold Dust used to forge the Gilded Sword in Majora's Mask. You can even sell the leftover Gold Dust for a profit.

6) Boomerang – Multiple Zelda Games

Much like many items on this list, Link's boomerang has a multitude of uses that range from combat to puzzle solving, however, it has seen a few innovations over the series that keep it fresh and are worth mentioning. As we know, in Wind Waker it gained the ability to mark many targets at once, but it's Phantom Hourglass that took things a little further. Not only could you mark many targets, but you could also draw the path that it took giving puzzles a nice kick in the ass. Twilight Princess added a new spin by adding the element of wind allowing Link to put out fires and drag foes closer to him.

5) Ocarina of Time – Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask

Now we're getting to the good stuff. The Ocarina of Time is unique because it actually allows Link to manipulate time, which is pretty awesome. Its magic is unleashed after playing one of many songs Link will learn throughout his journey. In Ocarina of Time, Link can use the Ocarina to open the Door of Time, warp around the map, and is important to make progress through story elements. Its importance is increased in Majora's Mask by allowing you to manipulate time in many ways, which we all know is extremely important in that game. You can speed up time, slow it down, and even travel three days back in time. It is a really incredible item that is essential to both of these games.

4) Roc's Cape – Minish Cap

Roc's Cape is in my opinion one of the coolest items in the Zelda series. It proves to me that jumping on command (as opposed to the auto jump) can work in a Zelda game. Its usefulness is proven when it allows you to jump over pits that were previously untraversable. It also allows Link to glide over long distances which makes it better than the simple jump of Roc's Feather.

3) Bow/Arrows – Multiple Zelda Games

Ganon can only be truly defeated with Silver/Light arrows.

2) Clawshot – Twilight Princess

I was considering placing the hookshot on this list, but let’s be honest, the Clawshot item is way, way cooler. It is first introduced in Twilight Princess (will be in Skyward Sword) as a single glove for Link to wear that initially seems to work just like the hookshot. However, a little later in the game Link finds a second Clawshot which he can wear on the opposite hand. In turn he becomes much like a fantasy themed Spider-Man. Wearing two of these Clawshots (aka Double Clawshot) means that Link can hook onto a surface and proceed to use the other hand to attach to another surface. This amounts to some crazy climbing sections and one of the best boss fights in Zelda history.

1) Masks – Majora’s Mask

What item could go up against the masks from this stellar Zelda game? Majora’s Mask has 24 masks with a range of abilities available to Link from transformations to the ability to run faster. Transformation masks such as the Goron, Deku, and Zora masks allow Link to take on the form and abilities of those races, while masks such as the Gibdo mask will trick ReDeads into thinking you are one of them. Some masks are incredibly useful like the Blast Mask, and some are only used a few times, but it is their charm and variety that makes them number 1.

SPOILERS

  • The ideas offered to the Zelda formula in Skyward Sword have "never been better."
  • Forest beasts need to have their shields cut down before you can strike at their weak points.
  • Mechanical Beamos and floating attack drones need to be cut along seams of energy.
  • Multiple ways to battle most enemies: evasive play, aggressive play, and strategic play.
  • Shield bash works as a nice parry against some enemies.
  • Some Stalfos attacks can chip away three of Link's hearts.
  • Potions are selected from a real-time radial inventory, and enemies won't wait for you to down your drinks.
  • Skyloft "apes" Clock Town, and is overflowing with sidequests and characters.
  • Scavenging for items is reminiscent of resource-gathering in Monster Hunter.
  • Link may have to return to old dungeons to nab additional loot and possibly previously-hidden items as well.
  • Phi analyzes items and enemies, much like Navi from Ocarina of Time, but does so with robotic detachment. A comparison is made to Metroid's scan visor.
  • Puzzles in the overworld are compared to the Shadow Bug hunting in Twilight Princess. It doesn't seem as bad as it sounds, though - the previewer is talking about that level of investigation of and attention to your environment.
  • Silent Realm is described as a parkour obstacle course. No items to grapple with, just you versus the world... and the invincible monsters in it. Stunning guardians is a strategic process.
  • Reiteration that surface world is made of self-contained areas.
  • Storm clouds prevent you from flying too far away in the early stages of the game.
  • Skyward Sword's world described as a "best of" Hyrule. (Dey be stealin' my words!)
  • Sky Temple interior reminds this previewer of Tomb Raider.
  • Malfunctioning minecarts in a later level are powered up by "rainbow energy." At first you'll have to strike mystical stones to unleash this energy - but perhaps you'll be able to produce it yourself later on...
  • Fujibayashi's story really shines this time and takes major leaps in terms of ambition and scope, just like Spirit Tracks did by more directly involving Zelda in the story.

New Club Nintendo Reward: History of Handheld Systems: Collectible Cards

Severely overpriced collector cards

Wizorb is now available on X-Box Live Indie Games

A story about an X-Box Live game on a Nintendo website you say? Well, yes I want to tell those of you with an Xbox about this game. PIXELTAO was one of the first websites to link back to me after I reviewed their very NES-like Ninja Senki, which happens to be a pretty amazing, kick you in the nuts platformer, and it's time that I return the favour.

Wizorb, developed by the newly formed Tribute Games/(PIXELTAO) looks like a pretty amazing and innovative breakout style game. It released today and is only 240 Microsoft Points for crying out loud, that's reason enough to support a very innovative and solid Indie developer. I will unfortunately have to wait for the PC version before playing, but I ask those who have an X-box to log on and at least try the free demo. If you need some more convincing here is the latest trailer for the game:

Even More The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Spoilers from G4TV

I don't know how I could possibly pick out more info from what seems to be the same preview again, but there are a few details/spoilers here that you may want to read. As always, just in case that is...

SPOILERS

  • Link can whistle and his bird will come
  • The pet you are forced to find is Zelda's pet and is called Ming
  • This preview says you start off with six hearts instead of three (but I bet it's for the preview only)
  • If i haven't mentioned it yet then I will now. Racing is completely controlled with the Wii Remote Plus
  • Zelda pushes you from the Statue and you have to use the sailcloth to glide to safety. Sailcoth will used a lot in the game and will stay equipped, press B to whip it out
  • Fi sounds similar to GLaDOS of Portal fame
  • Fi was created to guide the wielder of the Goddess Sword in a journey to stop the apocalypse
  • Townspeople say you should get a potion before going to the land below, and what do you know you get a free one when you talk to the potion lady in the bazaar
  • One clerk in the bazaar will store items for you

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Opening Trailer

New The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword Spoilers from IGN

IGN has just posted their new preview for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Here are the details/spoilers:
    SPOILERS

    • Skyward Sword opens with Link sleeping in his bed (ALTTP?), a Crimson Loftwing startles Link and wakes him
    • Skyward Sword then throws you in to a bunch of tutorials (in between story and character development) to learn the new Wii Motion Plus controls and game mechanics
    • Your health bar will suffer if you attempt to "waggle" through the game
    • The uniforms for graduation have a unique characteristic; Its color denotes the year of graduation. Link's class is Green of course
    • Link is tasked with an errand of bringing a barrel of food to the kitchen. Lessons early on will show you how much you will be using motion plus such as rolling and throwing
    • Other basic abilities are quickly covered: Z-targeting, dashing, climbing, auto-jumping and save points
    • Save Points are now crucial to your progress. Sounds like there is no more saving when you feel like it
    • Link's stamina bar will deplete depending on the activity. Climbing a wall will slowly deplete it while jumping up the wall will take more from Link. Special Attacks and Dashing also deplete stamina (I thought some of this was supposed to be new?)
    • IGN thinks the stamina meter was cleverly implemented to keep Link from being overpowered
    • Zelda forces Link to complete a flying tutorial
    • Groose steals Link's Loftwing and Link has to save it; He gains a sword and shield in the process
      • Groose is likened to Biff Tannen from Back to the Future
    • A sword tutorial will also happen during this period that showcases Motion Plus capability
    • Link will fight through a small cave filled with Chu Chus and Keese on his journey to save his Loftwing companion
    • After saving the Loftwing you will then take part in the race we've known about for awhile
    • Zelda then gets swallowed by a tornado
    • Fi wakes Link after this happens and leads him to a secret chamber where he is presented with the Goddess Sword and some direction to find Zelda
    • Gaepora visits and reveals that he knew about the Goddess Sword and hands Link his green tunic
    • A graveyard and lake can also be found in Skyloft
I'm a little disappointing with some of these "new" details, but there are a few interesting tidbits that I've never seen until now.

Press Release: New Story Details and Characters Revealed for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii

This is stuff we already know, but for the sake of being as complete as possible:
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nintendo has revealed new details about the introductory storyline and game play in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which will launch exclusively for the Wii system on Nov. 20. The enhanced motion controls of the Wii Remote Plus (or Wii Remote controller with a Wii MotionPlus accessory) and Nunchuk controller allow for deeply immersive puzzle-solving challenges in this latest addition to the iconic Zelda franchise. This new game – one of the biggest in the history of Nintendo software development – will also feature new story elements that lay the foundation for the events that occur in the rest of the series. This includes the creation of the Master Sword, an ancient and powerful weapon that has been a constant in the 25-year history of the Zelda series. The introductory storyline includes the following:
    • Introduction: The new game’s storyline begins in Skyloft, an island town suspended high in the sky, on the day before young Link is to compete in a major bird-flying competition. The winner of the contest will earn the honor of taking part in a special ceremony with Zelda.
    • Link and Zelda: Friends since childhood, Link and Zelda have always shared a special bond. Events in the new game will add even more depth to their relationship.
    • Groose: Link’s nemesis at school, Groose, plays a significant role in the early moments of the new game. This bully of a character not only threatens Link’s chances to win the bird-flying competition, but he also reveals a jealous streak toward Link and Zelda’s special bond.
    • Fi: Early on in Link’s new adventure, he encounters Fi, the spirit of the powerful Goddess Sword. Fi’s guidance proves to be crucial as Link goes forth on a challenging quest that will ultimately result in the creation of the Master Sword.
    • Zelda’s father: Gaepora, Zelda’s father, is the headmaster of Link’s school. As such, he has knowledge of the history and legends of Skyloft.
More details about the game’s storyline and features will be revealed prior to its Nov. 20 launch.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be available as a standalone game or as part of a limited-edition bundle that also includes a gold-colored Wii Remote Plus controller. Additionally, every copy in the early production runs of the game will come packaged with a special music CD containing orchestral arrangements of select songs that will be performed at the upcoming The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony Concert.

Most everything is new, except for the bit about the Silent Realm, that was revealed by Game Informer in their earlier coverage. As always...

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - Lizalfos Battle

Game Informer has posted their last exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword video. This time they battle new versions of an old favorite: Lizalfos.

      Tiny Play Nintendo Update!

Very tiny update for everyone. I have removed one of the sidebars from the site as I feel it was making things a little crowded. I think the current setup is much better, especially for reading reviews and articles alike.

A second small update is the change in my Twitter account. I am using the same account, just a different account name. The official Play Nintendo Twitter account can be found at @PlayNintendoCA

Leaked The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Intro

A video has surfaced that shows off the intro for Skyward Sword, it is in Spanish, but Zelda Informer has translated it into English. This video will include spoilers, so it will be shown after the break. Zelda Informer also has an additional video that shows some gameplay leading up to and including some of the first dungeon.

New The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition Trailer

      Tuesday, September 27, 2011

The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Anniversary Edition Available Tomorrow!

Since we're on the topic of Zelda, what better chance to remind 3DS owners that they can download their copy of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition tomorrow! It will be free to download and will remain so until February 20th, 2012. This is good news for the inevitable new group of 3DS owners following the holiday season.

Tons of The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword Spoilers

In the latest issue of Nintendo Power you will find a butt load of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword spoilers. You can also find them here at Play Nintendo. I would suggest that you only read on if you don't mind being spoiled, otherwise don't read the rest of this story:

      SPOILER ALERT

      • The Skyward Sword has an official name; It is being called the "Goddess Sword" and Link acquires it before getting his "Hero's Garb"
      • Link has premonitions of the creature that swallows Zelda
      • A red-headed rival of Link's is named Groose and has a crush on Zelda. He also has lackeys (which I think is hilarious) named Cawlin and Stritch
      • Zelda's father is named "Gaepora" and is the headmaster of the Knights Academy. He has an owl sounding laugh
      • A character named "Pipin" is the Island's bird expert and another character named "Fledge" is a wimp
      • Skyloft is said to be HUGE with a full residential quarter, the bazaar, a plaza area which holds the "Goddess Statue", a bath house and apparently there is also a toilet
      • Link and Zelda have a trusting relationship. She wakes him to show him a dress and even pushes him off the Island to force him to practice flying. This stuff happens early in the game
      • Zelda is about to tell Link something that she has been holding in for awhile, but then Ghirahim's tornado appears and she falls to the surface while Link is saved by his bird
      • "Fi" is the correct spelling of "Phi"; seems to be musical related
      • Fi is a spirit created by the goddess to guide Link. She appears when Skyloft gets attacked and Link has to chase her down
      • Skyward Sword has a day/night system. It doesn't occur in real time, however. Link has to go to bed in the game to access the night. New creatures come out at night including Keese, Slime, and demonic cat-like creatures
      • Three HUD options are available including a Standard (E3 2010 Demo), Light (E3 2011 Demo) and Pro (practically invisible)
      • Like in Wind Waker you can knock a lot of background objects over (I haven't played Wind Waker in some time, so I'm not sure what this means)
      • The blocks that unlock treasures in the Sky are called "Goddess Cubes" and the sword beam that unlocks them is called the "Skyward Strike"
      • Sheikah Stones from OOT 3D return as the game's hint system
      • You do have to save at save statues, but you will start at that location instead of the beginning of an area. You can also return to any activated save statue on the surface when in the Sky
      • The second dungeon is the "Earth Dungeon" while it was previously thought to be the "Fire Dungeon" (Eldin Volcano Dungeon)
      • Scaldera's official boss name is "Pyroclastic Fiend Spaldera"
      • Ghirahim is seeking to revive his master. Nintendo Power thinks this is related to the giant Fused Shadow like creature
      • Link has to raid a Bokoblin Camp to rid the Eldin Volcano of their presence. Mogma's reward Link with the Digging Gloves and Bomb Bag for his good deed
      • Nintendo Power also confirms that the Sheikah like woman from the latest trailer is very "ninja-like"
There you have it, lots of spoilers to ruin the first couple hours of Skyward Sword. I will not viewing video content when the game is released, therefore I will not be posting any of it. I will be too busy playing the game! Expect some sort of blog-like feature (in addition to the First Four Hours Of...) to arrive when the game is released.

What did Nintendo.com look like in 1996 and beyond?

I've been noticing a few articles popping up that showcase websites from years and years ago. I'm talking back when the Internet was only accessed by most of us through our school or public library. How is this achieved? Well, it seems that an archive of the Internet exists through a website called the Wayback Machine. So, being the nerd that I am the first thing I searched for was nintendo.com. The wave of nostalgia that hit me was something I wasn't ready to experience.

      Nintendo.com in '96

I immediately recognize the Super Mario 64 splash page, do you? I remember surfing to this page at school and at the library to find all kinds of Nintendo awesomeness. You see, rumblings of a certain Zelda 64 were starting up around this time, and finding screenshots and information for the game was extremely easy during the early era of Nintendo on the Internet.Nintendo Power being a good choice as well, but let's face it, the Internet was much more exciting than a magazine back then.

Click to see a larger image of Nintendo in all its 1996 Glory
I forgot how primitive the Internet was back in those days, but one thing surely shone through, and that was substance. Nintendo.com had tons of info on upcoming games and technology including the latest screenshots from the latest Space World show. If you were a Nintendo fan, you were caught surfing this webpage during your limited school Internet time.

      Link at Space World 1996

      Nintendo.com in '97

Not much changed in early 1997, other than some new info and a nifty new navigation bar, However, Nintendo.com would see its first evolution in the latter part of '97.

It looks like it didn't take long for Nintendo to take advantage of what the Internet could do for business. We got a new trendy look and even more Nintendo information. What's most interesting to me is that even though the N64 was on the market, SNES was still held in very high regard by Nintendo. We see this with the DS and 3DS today, but not so much between the Wii and Gamecube. I guess because the Wii was a much different approach to the market than the Gamecube, whereas the N64 and SNES still catered to a similar market (much like the DS and 3DS today). Just a little theory of mine.

      Nintendo.com in '01

Nintendo.com wouldn't undergo another major facelift until 2001. It seems like Nintendo.com would be updated to be more accesible with each facelift. Essentially just evolving with the times.

      Nintendo.com in '04

Another updated look would come in 2004, but I honestly prefer Nintendo.com circa 2001.

      Nintendo.com in '06

Nintendo.com would change again in 2006, but again, it is a far cry from my favourite Nintendo.com.

      Nintendo.com Now

Nintendo.com would go through a few minor changes throughout the years until settling down with its streamline design in 2008. While like many other eras of Nintendo.com brought change, Nintendo hasn't really changed much over the past few years. If pattern is any indication then we should soon be seeing a new Nintendo.com, perhaps to coincide with the launch of the Wii U?

I thought this would be a fun ride for those of you whom have followed Nintendo during their stay on the Internet. However, the neat thing about this is that you can navigate some of these websites as if they were still operational; give or take a few 404 errors of course.

      Fossil Fighters Champions

      A Bone to Pick

In this dino-tastic adventure, players get some hands-on time to hunt and clean fossils, and revive and battle vivosaurs. A fossil park is hosting a large-scale tournament in which competitors enter vivosaurs created from dinosaur fossils into competition. Fossil Fighters from all over the world battle their vivosaurs against one another to find out who will be crowned champion.

      FEATURES:
      • Players excavate and clean fossils. New giant fossil rocks (containing complete dinosaur fossils) and odd fossil rocks (which are two-sided) add to the fun of the cleaning process.
      • Once the fossils have been cleaned, they can be revived into vivosaurs, which players can then arrange into teams for battles. The better the fossils have been cleaned, the more powerful the vivosaurs are in battle.
      • Strategy is key in battles. Players must put forth teams of three vivosaurs, then rotate their positions to maximize their power advantage over opponents.
      • New “super evolver” vivosaurs evolve into new forms with the help of gold fossils.
      • Players can compete in matchmaking battles or upload their best team to see how it fares against others. Players can also download additional vivosaurs and events.
      • Using DS Download Play, one player who has the game can link up wirelessly with up to three other Nintendo DS owners within range and cooperate to expertly clean fossils together.

The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword shakes up the tried-and-true adventure game formula and marks a turning point for the franchise. The introduction of full motion controls enabled by Wii MotionPlus™ technology synchronizes player movements with Link’s actions while offering the most intuitive play control of any game in the series to date.

      FEATURES:
      • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword boasts the most realistic sword combat of any game to date, turning every encounter into a challenge of both brains and brawn. Analyzing enemy attack and defense tendencies and counteracting with precise swings of the sword provide a satisfying experience that blends puzzle-solving with a new and distinctly unique combat system.
      • Explore a massive, multilayered world that seamlessly blends soaring exploration in a sea of clouds with intense ground-based adventuring that blurs the line between the main world and traditional Zelda dungeons. • Prepare for intense puzzle-solving as only The Legend of Zelda games can deliver. Exploration of the forests, volcanoes and deserts requires players to think on their feet as they solve puzzles, overcome obstacles and escape deadly traps. Once they find their way to each dungeon, they are confronted by even more puzzles guarded by fiendish enemies.
      • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword redefines the traditional Zelda framework and introduces an arsenal of items, upgrades and rewards unlike any game in the franchise to date. The adventure guides players into, out of and back to dungeons and areas they’ve already completed. Along the way, Link gathers a massive inventory of peculiar items and resources that can be used to upgrade many of his weapons and equipment.
      • A new weapon upgrade system allows players to gather raw materials from throughout hyrule that can be used to upgrade weapons, equipment and items, or create entirely new ones from scratch.
      • The game also will feature a boss challenge mode and, for players who need assistance, optional hint movies to help them along.

      Fortune Street Fact Sheet

Get on Board, Corner the Market and Make a Fortune

Players become familiar characters from the Nintendo and DRAGON QUEST universes in a board game that challenges them to play the real estate and stock markets wisely to win. Players race around the board trying to accumulate wealth and hit a target value while buying, selling and trading property with friends and family to see who can be the first to cash out. What appears at first to be a simple property-buying board game offers multiple levels of money-maximizing opportunity.

      FEATURES:
      • Players move around one of more than 15 boards, buying shops to build their portfolios and collecting symbols they can cash in at the bank to earn more gold to invest. It takes money to make money, so racing around the board may not be the best strategy.
      • To capitalize on their monetary gains, players can make investments, play the stock market, purchase shops and collect shopping fees. When players buy multiple shops adjacent to one another, the property value grows and both shops level up. Other players who land on those squares have to pay an increased shopping fee.
      • Players can choose to play as a variety of Mushroom Kingdom characters, as DRAGON QUEST characters or even as their own Mii™ characters.
      • More than 15 game boards with different shapes and layouts are available to provide endless replay value.
      • The beginner setting called “easy rules” helps newcomers learn the basics, while the more advanced, “standard rules” introduces more challenges, deeper strategy options and the ability to play the virtual stock market.
      • Play against friends with the Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection.
      • The franchise has been a hit in Japan, and this marks its first appearance in North America.

Kirby Mass Attack Review (Nintendo DS) - Play Nintendo

Kirby has been a Super Star, a ball of yarn, and has even been limbless at one point in the series. Now, Kirby faces another quirky adventure and he isn't alone. Kirby Mass Attack features not just one Kirby, but ten! The adorable pink puffball has been split into ten weaker versions of himself by the villainous Necrodeus, in an attempt to rule the land of Pop Star. Necrodeus, taking advantage of the weaker Kirbys, manages to defeat all but one. One Kirby manages to make an escape to nearby planet Green Grounds. Here he finds a piece of him that was lost in the attack, his heroic heart.

Kirby's heroic heart plays a very important role in the gameplay of Kirby Mass Attack. It functions as the pointer in this completely touchscreen controlled game. Touching the bottom screen will cause the heroic heart to appear which Kirby will then walk towards. This is how you will control your herd of Kirbys. Tapping twice will cause them to run. Make a flicking motion with the stylus and your Kirby will jump. Sounds pretty easy, right? Surprisingly, this game is extremely easy to control even when controlling what may seem like an overwhelming group of ten Kirbys. That was initially one of my concerns, but Nintendo really hit a home run with these controls.

Kirby Mass Attack plays very similar to traditional platformers with the goal being to reach the door at the end of the stage. Throughout each stage, players will solve puzzles, collect fruit and battle enemies. All of which is easily done with the stylus. You gain additional Kirbys by collecting fruit; each piece being worth a different point amount. After reaching a total of 100 points, a new Kirby is born. Gaining new Kirbys is important for solving puzzles and even defeating enemies. Certain puzzles elements will require a set number of Kirbys, while enemies will face a massive beating with 20 little Kirby fists. I think Kirby beating up his enemies with his fists and not relying on copy abilities makes him quite the bad ass.

Kirby Mass Attack features a wide variety of stages that are accessed through the overworld map. Some stages require more Kirbys to enter. Almost every stage will introduce some new mechanic that will keep the game feeling fresh right up until the very last stages. Kirby will be faced with pushing and pulling objects, smashing blocks, finding keys and a number of other objectives that range from easy to moderate difficulty. Some sections may even surprise you with the level of challenge, but as long as you stay alert you will be fine. In terms of level design, your team of Kirbys will be faced with grasslands, ice, and even horror themed stages that are both well structured and fun to play through. Stages may even be longer than you think and even feature alternate paths which will no doubt have you coming back for more. Stages also sport bouts with mini-bosses, pinball games, riding in a tank and a lot more I could talk about, but that would ruin the experience for you. Bosses are also quite fun to fight, and even Whispy Woods has a few new tricks up his sleeve.

This game is also strong in other areas as well. The presentation for this package is fantastic. It is a very colorful and attractive looking game from its menus to the sprites and level design themselves. Kirby's animations are some of the most adorable I've ever seen, and even while running some Kirbys will showcase different emotions; this level of detail is incredible and will charm you like no Kirby game before. Kirby Mass Attack, like many Kirby games, is also strong in the soundtrack itself. It features a huge soundtrack that includes the main game and unlockable content (which I'll get to in just a moment. A lot of new Kirby songs are introduced, but some old songs show up in the form of remixes which are quite nice to hear.

What could be the biggest surprise to me is the amount of content that is contained within this Nintendo DS game. There are a large number of stages that are usually quite lengthy taking anywhere from 10-15 minutes to fully explore and complete. While exploring each stage you will run across Medals. There are 186 to collect throughout the game, with some being hidden very well and some right out in the open. Usually, however, you will have to go off the beaten path to discover them all. Why would you want to collect these medals? Well, this is how you gain access to the extra content and it is definitely worth your time.

After acquiring a set number of medals, you will be rewarded with an extra! Extras include mini-games, music player, and others. Now, I won't reveal too much about the mini-games, but you will be rewarded with some nice Kirby nostalgia. Some of these games feel much larger than a mini-game including a short, but fun Kirby RPG and challenging Shoot 'em up adventure. Trust me, this content is extremely well done and will have you breaking away from the main game quite often. One last thing I wanted to mention about the replay value in this game is the list of achievements. Much like X-Box 360 games, when certain conditions are met you will be rewarded with an achievement. I'm not sure what clearing the entire checklist does, but it adds even more to a game that already has it all.

      Gameplay (10/10)
Kirby Mass Attack is a lot of fun to play and sports surprisingly easy and intuitive controls. A wide variety of levels and game mechanics keep things feeling fresh until the very end.

      Story (7/10)
While the story is pretty straight forward it is enjoyable. Our new villain, Necrodeus, puts Kirby in a situation he hasn't faced before, but once again the ultimate objective is to defeat the bad guy and save the Island of Pop Star. Saving a downed Kirby to keep your team strong against the enemy adds a little emotion that will always keep you marching forward.

      Design (10/10)
This game is presented well right from the opening screen with colorful menus and awesome stage design. Throw in adorable Kirby sprites with varying emotions and gorgeous backgrounds and you have a huge winner.

      Sound (9/10)
Kirby Mass Attack has a huge soundtrack including new Kirby songs and great remixes of some old favourites.

      Value (10/10)
This game will probably be the last great Nintendo DS game. It features a lot of stages, unlockable content, and collectibles that will have you playing for hours on end. I'm roughly 10 hours in and there is still about 40% more to be seen according to my save file. This game is worth every penny you pay.

      Overall
Kirby Mass Attack feels like Nintendo's swan song for its handheld, and it will be considered such if this is the last great Nintendo DS game they release. It features easy controls and extremely fun gameplay, as well as a library of unlockable content and hidden collectibles that increase the replay value greatly. Up against a large and great Nintendo DS library, Kirby Mass Attack definitely holds its own. Gamers will feel proud to have this game in their collection.

      Final Score: 92%
